Introduction
Have you ever tried to get someone to believe you or do something for you and failed? Have you ever asked a parent to give you more allowance, let you stay out a little later, or buy you those new shoes? What methods do you use to persuade them? Do they work? Do you need more techniques?
What if a friend is about to endanger themselves, and they won't listen to you? How do you get a lazy brother or sister to do something with you or for you?
Do you ever wish you could change a school policy like the lunch or the dress code? Do you know what you could say that would influence the administration to change?
Objectives: This Web Lesson will focus on persuasion. You will be able to
1) identify persausive techniques
2) give examples of techniques
3) write and deliver your own persausive speech
Task
You are a natural persuader! You do it every day. When you talk to your friends or your parents you use persuasive speech. Most of the time you assume that your listeners agree with you. In this Web Lesson you will assume that your listeners do NOT agree with you at the start.
Your task is to change your listeners' minds or way of thinking about a topic.
Process
In order to be able to change your listeners' minds, you will need to learn the techniques of persuasion.
The first step of the process will be to learn the different techniques that are used in persuasive speeches.
The second step will be to read/watch/listen to famous speeches. Analyze these speeches to identify the techniques that were used and the effectiveness of the techniques.
In step three you will pick a topic that you are passionate about and develop your own speech using the techniques you have learned. Your audience will be your classmates.
