Le Reveillon, or New Year's Eve, is one of the oldest and most observed celebrations
in France. New Year's Eve is usually a private celebration when people like to have dinner
with thier family and enjoy ball called une soirée dansante. The dinner usually consists of
dishes like fois gras, and champagne. In South Western France, there is a tradition to attend
the evening mass and participate in the torchlight procession heading towards the vineyards
for mulled wine.
In Paris, visitors and residents alike cannot miss the annual 2-day festival Celebrate
France, in which thousands of performers from all over the world take part. The
parade marches through Chantilly on the 31st December and then on the 1st January
the gala moves to the Trocadéro, under the Eiffel Tower. The New Year holidays in
France ends on January 6 with the ceremonial
cutting of a special type of festive cake called
la gallete des rois.
